What is foundation/ footing and what are the different types of foundation/ footing?

The lowest part of a structure which transmits and distribute the total load of the structure to a larger area of underlying support, prevents differential settlement and provides stability to the structure is called foundation/ footing.

- COMBINED FOOTING

When two or more columns are supported by a single base area to provide the foundations is called combined footing.

- STRAP FOOTING
A strap footing is a type of combined footing, consisting of two or more column footings connected by a concrete beam. This type of beam is called a strap beam.

- ISOLATED FOOTING

Isolated footings also known as Pad or Spread footings are commonly used for shallow foundations in order to carry and spread concentrated loads, caused for example by columns or pillars. Isolated footings can consist either of reinforced or non-reinforced material.

- ECCENTRIC FOOTING
The eccentric footing is a spread or wall footing that must resist a moment in addition to the axial column load, and has the shape of a shoe.

The eccentric footing is designed in such a way that the center of gravity of the superimposed load coincides with the center of gravity of the base area resulting in uniform bearing pressure. This footing is subjected to concentric loading.
